Skincare, Beauty & Hair Tips by Amanda Elias

You’ll see a lot of fake tan reviews on this blog, it’s a bit of a necessity when you’re naturally this pale

Yes I used a filter, without it I looked like a witch!

Now don’t get me wrong, I LOVE pale skin, Nicole Kidman’s look in Moulin Rouge was just perfect but with my dark hair (particularly now that I’m darker) and my dark eyes, I look much better with a bit of colour.

I was sent a sample of Madame LA LA West Coast, a face bronzing serum that has a range of lovely ingredients such as coco water, green tea, and vitamins C, A & E and is free from synthetic fragrance and parabens and is not tested on animals.

It’s a tinted formula designed to give instant colour. When I first applied I used a small amount and when I rubbed it on my face it was a bit of a “wow, gravy browning” moment! But as I continued massaging it in, it faded in to a really lovely bronzed glow. The colour really is the nicest, instant colour I’ve experienced, it wasn’t sticky, shiny or dry, it just made my skin look lovely with no green tinge at all, I tried to get a good picture but it just didn’t capture the glow and that glow is important!
It doesn’t give any coverage and doesn’t contain an SPF but it also isn’t crazy brown so I was happy to put it on and drive the children to school and answer the door to the postman without getting a few strange looks. It definitely made me look a lot healthier, I love something that can just give me that instant boost with minimal effort, in literally 30 seconds you can go from pasty to bronzed goddess which will last a good few days, no more “are you feeling ok, you look a little pale?” comments on the school run for me!

I left it on alone for about 8 hours the first time, the second time I left it on for a couple of hours and then applied SPF and make-up on top which didn’t seem to cause a problem or leave the finished result patchy. The colour really is lovely, a lot deeper than I expected but still very natural looking. It’s been designed to give you an LA tan rather than the usual mediterranean style tanners, I don’t tan easily and don’t allow myself to tan naturally anymore so I’ll trust this is the colour I’d go if I visit LA. I use chemical exfoliators which means tans don’t last very long on my face, so I can’t really give an accurate timing as to how long it lasts, I re-tan every 3 days.

Instructions say to apply with hands or a mitt, I used my hands, it does stain a little but not deeply and the stain comes off in two or three washes, I prefer to tan my face with my hands so I’ll be sticking to this method, if you do too, try and use just your fingertips so that you don’t stain the whole palm of your hands.

You can buy this from Madame LALA website and on Lookfantastic (Currently on a 3 for 2 deal) for £28, which I think is a great price, this is a whopping 100ml bottle and you only need a small amount for your face and neck so it’s going to last ages. I’m definitely trying the body tan, I NEED an LA tan all over!!

I’m really struggling with this tanner. I definitely wouldn’t recommend using it in the morning as it suggests as it settles into pores, makes my skin look dirty rather than glowing, and if I try to apply makeup afterwards it balls up. I’ll give it a try at night, then it doesn’t matter if I look like I’ve not bothered to wash my face! I love Madame LA LA self-tanning mousse but this is a fail for me 🙁

Helen, are you applying a pea sized amount? I’ve found that you really only need a small amount, anything more and it does get a bit too dark. Vita Liberata’s bronzing powder gives a lovely finish but the tan is very light.
